Toshiba made a strong impression at Comic Con Africa, bringing its Japanese TV heritage, gaming technology and REGZA picture technology to one of South Africa’s biggest pop-culture and gaming events.

The brand showcased its latest television technology throughout Comic Con Africa, giving attendees the opportunity to experience Toshiba TVs hands-on through gaming challenges, head-to-head competitions and immersive demonstrations. With Toshiba TVs powering displays across Comic Con Africa, visitors were able to experience the brand’s REGZA Engine technology and REGZA AI Gaming Mode in a real-world gaming environment. For Comic Con Africa attendees, this meant being able to sit down, pick up a controller and experience the technology for themselves.

The hands-on experience was an important part of Toshiba’s approach at the event, with the brand focused on allowing attendees to experience the technology rather than simply reading about its specifications. The approach gave attendees the opportunity to experience the difference for themselves, particularly when testing the TVs through fast-paced competitive games. As Natalie the Marketing Manager of Toshiba South Africa explained:

“Yeah. Other than us saying that our TV says 144 hertz, we want them to have the tangible experience…..”

Toshiba used Comic Con Africa as an opportunity to highlight its Japanese heritage and long history in television technology. The brand positioned its TVs around the combination of picture quality, gaming performance and entertainment, giving visitors more than just a traditional television demonstration.

REGZA Engine and AI Gaming Mode Take Centre Stage

One of the major highlights of Toshiba’s activation was its REGZA Engine technology, which is designed to process and enhance the picture displayed on compatible Toshiba TVs. Toshiba also showcased its REGZA AI Gaming Mode, with the gaming experience designed to provide a responsive experience for players.

At the activation, attendees could experience gaming on large-format Toshiba TVs, including an impressive 85-inch display, with games such as EA Sports FC and Street Fighter 6 forming part of the experience. The gaming setup was designed to demonstrate Toshiba’s focus on reducing distractions such as picture lag and frame tearing, allowing players to concentrate on the game.

1v1 Gaming Battles Across Xbox and PlayStation

Gaming was at the heart of Toshiba’s Comic Con Africa activation. The brand created a dedicated gaming arena where attendees could compete against each other in 1v1 matches, with multiple gaming stations available. Visitors were able to play across different platforms, including Xbox and PlayStation, creating an environment where gamers could challenge friends, other attendees and eventually some of the strongest competitors at the event. Street fighter 6 was particularly suited to the head-to-head format, while football gaming provided another opportunity for players to test their skills against each other. For Toshiba, the setup also provided an opportunity to demonstrate how its television technology performs in a demanding gaming environment.

The Ultimate Prize: A Toshiba TV

The gaming competition wasn’t just about bragging rights. At the end of each day, the player who achieved the highest number of consecutive wins stood a chance of taking home a Toshiba television. During the earlier stages of the competition, the prize TVs included 43-inch Toshiba models, while the final day saw Toshiba increase the stakes with a 55-inch TV up for grabs. As the competition continued, the winning streaks became increasingly difficult to beat. One of the final competitors managed to win 58 consecutive matches, setting an impressive benchmark for anyone attempting to claim the prize. The result was a gaming challenge that encouraged attendees to keep coming back, with players attempting to beat the existing winning streak and become the ultimate Toshiba Comic Con Africa champion.

Tech Scene ZA Gets Involved in the Action

Tech Scene ZA was also at Comic Con Africa and got involved in Toshiba’s gaming activation. Rather than simply covering the Toshiba experience from the sidelines, Tech Scene ZA took part in the 1v1 gaming challenges, going head-to-head with other attendees. The activation also gave visitors an opportunity to interact with Toshiba’s branding and Japanese heritage, including Toshiba headbands handed out at the event. This combination of gaming, technology demonstrations and Japanese-inspired branding helped make the Toshiba activation an interactive part of the Comic Con Africa experience.

Toshiba’s Comic Con Africa activation brought together three key elements: Japanese TV heritage, picture technology and gaming. With Toshiba TVs used throughout the activation, visitors had the opportunity to experience the brand’s REGZA Engine and REGZA AI Gaming Mode while competing against other gamers on Xbox and PlayStation. The 1v1 format also helped create a competitive atmosphere, culminating in a remarkable 58-game consecutive winning streak on the final day. For attendees, the biggest benefit was being able to experience Toshiba’s technology hands-on and see how its televisions performed in an environment where responsiveness and picture quality matter. And for the gamers who took part, there was an added incentive: the chance to walk away from Comic Con Africa with a Toshiba TV of their own.
