Volkano Mini UPS

This is apart of the Volkano Sustain Series and it promises us up to 4 hours of up time through its 19.24 watt-hour or 5200 mAh battery.

Product features

  • It has a 12V and 9V output, 5V USB output and and 24V power over ethernet output.
  • It has overcharge and over discharge protection.
  • It comes built-in with overcurrent and short circuit protection.
  • Comes with a 2m cable extension.

The Volkano Mini UPS retails for R680 on Takealot . It has a sister prouduct for WIFI or CCTV devices with a multi-output that retails for R800.

This device is geared to a single output rather than a multi-output. It is more an ADSL, than a fiber output, because on fiber you would have your ONT and your router. On ADSL you would only have your router.

One thing to mention about this device is that you need to check if your router is compatible with the output connector. We had this issue, as it connects to our ONT but our D-Link 825 router has a different charging pin compared to the output. It can catch you out, you need to do your homework before you go out and purchase it. All Huawei devices would be supported by this charging pin.

When testing was done, it took 6.5 – 7 hours to charge fully and it lasted around 4.5 hours. It was just running one device, which was our ONT. As a single output device, for keeping it on for 4 hours, it works great. Another thing that contributes to this is that it has a manual on and off button, this is bittersweet. You can switch it off when it is not in use and prolong its life or you can mistakenly switch it on and kill the device.

This device unfortunately does not have the the beeping function like a UPS to indicate that battery is being used at that it is on. You have to look at the device to know if its on or off. The fact that it comes built-in with a USB port, is absolutely useful. I mean many of us tend to charge or phones 5 minutes before loadshedding kicks in, and you can charge you phone even if the power is out,

Personal opinion

It would be nice if they has a support listing which routers can connect with the cable, or even if they offered a different cable that can be used to connect other devices that aren’t supported by the supplied cable. However it is a great device, and if you are thinking of purchasing it, go ahead you won’t regret it.
