SOUTH AFRICA, 27 JANUARY 2026 – The Sony World Photography Awards announce today the shortlists of the 2026 Student and Youth competitions, honouring outstanding photographers at the earliest stages of their careers. Among the shortlisted photographers is South Africa’s Chanel Grobler who is a student at the Open Window Institute. The Student shortlist celebrates poignant series exploring the theme Together, while the Youth shortlist spotlights the best single images by photographers aged 19 and under. Showcasing the skill and ingenuity of young practitioners exploring and experimenting with the medium, the shortlists offer a glimpse of the photography trailblazers of tomorrow.

STUDENT COMPETITION SHORTLIST

The 19th edition of the Sony World Photography Awards received more than 430,000 entries from over 200 countries and territories around the world. For the 2026 Student competition, photography students were invited to respond to the brief Together through a series of five to 10 images. The shortlisted series offer a range of interpretations of togetherness, from intimate explorations into the photographers’ communities to the everyday spaces where connections are fostered. Each shortlisted photographer creates a compelling visual narrative in their series, demonstrating their distinctive approach and perspective.

Above all, Together evokes interpretations centred around human connection. Taking an autobiographical approach, Julian Cabral’s (Argentina, Universidad Nacional de San Martín) project Triplets tells the story of the photographer and his two brothers, reflecting their close familial bond. Jubair Ahmed Arnob’s (Bangladesh, Counter Foto – A Center for Visual Arts) series The Place Where I Used To Play is imbued with a sense of nostalgia, charting the rapidly changing landscape in the Green Model Town in Dhaka, Bangladesh. On the other side of the globe, Ci Song (China Mainland, Drexel University, USA) photographs communities in West Philadelphia, as their neighbourhoods are transformed by gentrification. Elsewhere, Aakash Gulzar (India, MERC, University of Kashmir) invites viewers into the intimate world of pigeon keepers, highlighting the special connection between humans and these gentle birds.

Several shortlisted projects address the theme Together by spotlighting the shared experiences that bind communities. Teresa Halbreiter’s (Germany, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences) series Stillgestanden (‘Attention!’) opens a dialogue around femininity and individuality in the male-dominated institution of the German Armed Forces. Yulai Xu (China Mainland, University of the Arts London, UK) explores the intricacies of family relationships in the series Fish Tail;. Matte Dixon’s (Australia, Griffith University) Suspiria de Profundis (2025) series aims to explore how unease can invite reflection on the human condition and turn audiences towards a shared understanding.

The shortlisted projects also dive into the hearts of communities through the spaces they share. Laura Anna Rossa (Belgium, LUCA School of Arts Sint Lukas, Brussels) befriends Patrick, a resident at De Vallei, a long-term psychiatric ward in the Belgian countryside, and documents their time together. Chanel Grobler (South Africa, Open Window Institute) looks at the shared places which hold quiet traces of human presence. Zifan Zhang’s (China Mainland, Danish School of Media and Journalism (DJMX), Denmark) series documents the everyday lives of young Latvians, as they come of age, taking on various roles to reshape their country’s future.

The winner of Student Photographer of the Year will be selected from the 10 students and announced at the Sony World Photography Awards 2026 ceremony in London on 16 April. The overall winning university will receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment worth €30,000.

This year’s Student Competition shortlist was judged by Tess Raimbeau, Photo Editor, Libération (France).

YOUTH COMPETITION SHORTLIST

The Youth competition shortlist comprises single images by 10 photographers aged 19

and under. This year the entrants were invited to share their best images through an Open Call.

Across the shortlist, photographers capture serene images of the natural world, from mountainous landscapes to underwater scenes. Riley Shickle (United Kingdom, 19 years old) photographed Mount Fuji, framed by bright red autumn leaves near Lake Kawaguchi, Japan.  Abdallah Islam’s (Egypt, 19 years old) photograph of a triangular sculpture as it frames the Great Pyramid in Egypt, shows the harmony between the stark lines of the contemporary sculpture and ancient architecture. Similarly, Doğa Ergün (Türkiye, 15 years old) depicts a moment of symmetry as a horse and rider enter the sea, showing above and below the waterline in a single frame. Other photographers on the shortlist turned their cameras to inhabitants of the natural world; Jeirin Anton (Sri Lanka, 16 years old) captures the regal aura of the peacock as it dominates a glowing golden landscape, while Victor Reichert (France, 19 years old) portrays a tender moment between a family of monkeys. Elsewhere, Keira Pereira (Canada, 17 years old) encountered a red-eyed tree frog in the Costa Rican rainforest, perched motionless along a narrow leaf.

The shortlisted photographers also focused on the art of depicting motion and stillness. Ayden Feagle (United States, 16 years old) captured teamwork in action during a soccer match in Lake Wales, United States. Similarly, Philip Kangas (Sweden, 16 years old) photographed a moment of collaboration between two firefighters as they carried an artwork out of  the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm during a fire. Jane Mozzi (Argentina, 15 years old) captures the split second moment a BMX rider performing a backflip overlaps with an airplane flying past in the background. In contrast, turning the lens towards a moment of stillness and reflection, Ruohan Wang’s (China Mainland, 19 years old) portrait creatively uses shadow to obscure the sitter’s face, drawing the viewer’s gaze to their eyes.

This year’s Youth Photographer of the Year, selected from the shortlist by Ruby Rees-Sheridan, Assistant Curator, Photography, National Portrait Gallery (UK), will receive a range of Sony Digital Imaging equipment to continue to nurture their vision.

Durban’s retail landscape just received a major shake-up. Edgars — once one of South Africa’s most troubled retail names — has completed a bold relaunch of its Gateway Theatre of Shopping store under the leadership of Retailability, the Durban-based group that acquired the brand in 2020.

The relaunch signals more than a facelift. It marks Edgars’ renewed commitment to modern retail, tighter store identities, and fresh product categories designed to bring customers back into physical spaces.

A New Ground Floor: Beauty Meets Tech

One of the most notable changes is the complete redesign of the store’s ground floor. Previously a mixed-category layout, the space is now intentionally curated around cosmetics and technology — two high-demand segments that consistently draw foot traffic.

The tech section is spread across the back section of the store, but its brand lineup is surprisingly strong with dedicated stands for :

For many Durban shoppers, variety and accessibility are still major gaps in the city’s tech ecosystem. Edgars stepping into this space — even at a small scale — introduces competition, convenience, and a wider product choice for mainstream shoppers who may not visit specialist stores.

It’s a sign that Retailability recognises tech as a high-interest category that can help revitalise foot traffic and diversify Edgars’ identity moving forward.

Under Retailability, Edgars seems to be experimenting with a hybrid identity — blending cosmetics, clothing, and now an increasingly wide mix of tech products, from smartphones and laptops to gaming consoles and drones. It’s a bold move, but also a confusing one.

Cosmetics and fashion have always made sense together. They share a customer base, a lifestyle connection, and a long retail history. But cosmetics mixed with mid-range tech — especially laptops, PS5s, drones, speakers, and creator gear — feels like Edgars is trying to be a more “upmarket ”, a one-stop-shop that captures every brand collaboration they can secure.

And that’s the challenge:
If a customer wants affordable tech, they go to PEP, Ackermans, or online.
If they want premium tech, they go directly to the brand stores or specialist retailers.
If they want fashion and beauty, Edgars has always existed — but adding tech doesn’t give them a competitive lead. It simply places them on the same playing field as everyone else, without a differentiator.

Even the placement of the tech section — tucked at the back behind cosmetics and fragrances — makes it feel less like a strategic pillar and more like an experiment the brand is still figuring out.

Durban needs more tech retail options, and Edgars stepping into that gap is valuable. But whether this new mix of perfume, clothing, and multi-brand tech will resonate with customers — or whether it muddies Edgars’ identity further — remains to be seen. The relaunch is a step forward, but the real test will be whether this hybrid concept can find a clear demographic and define who the “new Edgars” is meant to serve.

Sony has officially increased the price of its PlayStation Plus subscriptions in South Africa, aligning with a global trend of rising gaming service costs. The updated pricing quietly went live on 12 April 2025, affecting all three membership tiers: Essential, Extra, and Deluxe.

What’s Behind the Price Hike?

Sony hasn’t offered specific reasoning for the local increase, but it follows a similar price adjustment seen in other regions since late 2023. Globally, the company cited the need to “continue providing high-quality games and value-added benefits” through the PlayStation Plus service.

This marks the second time South African gamers have had to absorb a price hike in under a year—the last increase was in September 2023. With the rising cost of living and the already high price of AAA games, the latest change may cause many to rethink their subscription tier.

Sony Group Corporation (“Sony”) will exhibit at CES® 2025, taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada from Tuesday, Jan. 7 (PST), under the theme “Creative Entertainment Vision,” the long-term vision for where Sony wants to be in 10 years.

Hiroki Totoki, President, COO and CFO of Sony Group Corporation took the stage at Sony’s press conference held on Monday, Jan. 6. Together with a diverse array of speakers, he introduced a number of foundational initiatives leading towards Sony’s “Creative Entertainment Vision” including new solutions that enable creative freedom such as a new vehicle processing system, and the latest solutions for spatial content creation. In addition to introducing initiatives in the field of anime to expand the fan community, Sony also highlighted projects for turning game IP into visual works, co-creation with music artists, and new location-based entertainment experiences as measures to expand the world of game IP from multiple perspectives. Among them, the production of an anime series based on the game “Ghost of Tsushima: Legends,” the launch of a new manga app “Crunchyroll Manga,” and the release month for the drama series “The Last of Us” season 2 were announced.

Additionally, with guest speaker Roger Goodell, Commissioner of the US National Football League, Sony shared the latest developments in the evolution of sports entertainment. In addition, Sony Honda Mobility also unveiled its EV “AFEELA 1,” for which it will begin accepting orders from 2025, as an example of mobility innovation.

Totoki closed the press conference by emphasizing that Sony’s “Creative Entertainment Vision” involves creators, partners and Sony colleagues working together, to create infinite realities for everyone that will spark imaginations and generate a boundless sense of Kando.

“XYN™” Integrated Software and Hardware Solution Designed to Support the Creation of Spatial Content

Sony Corporation announced today the launch of “XYN™,” an integrated software and hardware solution designed to support the creation of spatial content. Leveraging unique technologies in imaging, sensing, and display, “XYN” employs proprietary algorithms to accurately capture and reproduce objects, human motion, and backgrounds in real-world spaces, enabling efficient reproduction in a 3D Computer Graphics (CG) production environment and facilitating the construction of flexible workflows. Attendees can experience products and solutions currently under development at the booth.

LEGO® Horizon Adventures™ Brings the Music of mxmtoon Alive

LEGO® Horizon Adventures™ is a playful and light-hearted story inspired by the world of Horizon and made fully out of LEGO elements. Its theme song, written and produced by mxmtoon, further extends the Horizon franchise in an innovative way, whereby a teaser of the music video will be released at CES. The video leverage assets produced for the game by using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine to expand the game into animated content.

This project is an amazing collaboration with mxmtoon’s music that crossed the creativity of multiple teams, including Guerrilla, The LEGO Group, Pixomondo, and Sony. At the booth, visitors will be able to play the game and get a sneak peek of the music video, as well as to watch the behind-the-scenes that highlights the creative and production process.

Experience based on the theme “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle”

Aniplex Inc. is a comprehensive entertainment company with a wide range of businesses operating worldwide, including the planning and production of video and music works, primarily in the area of animation; game planning and development; theatrical production and distribution; and the planning, production and sales of merchandise.

At the booth, visitors can engage in experiences the themed around the anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, which is based on the manga by Koyoharu Gotoge published under SHUEISHA’s JUMP COMICS, and has over 150 million copies in publication. The animation production is by ufotable. The exhibit will include a photo booth that recreates the poster for the movie Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, the first in a trilogy of films that will be released in theaters worldwide in 2025.

Immersive Location-based Entertainment Concept based on “The Last of Us”

Sony is exploring ways to expand the value of content IP by developing a proof-of-concept for location-based entertainment with various technologies such as video, audio, and haptics to provide creators with new avenues for expression. At the booth, this future immersive entertainment concept features the suspenseful action-adventure game “The Last of Us” with high-definition video, 3D sound and olfactory technologies.
