I Attended the HONOR X9D Launch — Here’s Why This Might Be HONOR’s Most Practical Phone Yet

I attended the official launch of the HONOR X9D this week, and while it doesn’t chase flagship headlines, it might be one of the most deliberately engineered smartphones HONOR has launched in this segment.

Held in Sandton Jobhannesburg, the event focused less on flashy gimmicks and more on real-world durability, battery endurance, and long-term reliability, three areas HONOR clearly believes matter most to everyday users right now.

From the presentations to the hands-on experience, the message was consistent: the HONOR X9D is built to last longer, survive more, and stress you less.

Durability Was the Star of the Show

One of the biggest talking points at the event was durability, and HONOR leaned into this hard.

The X9D features what HONOR calls Ultra-Bounce Anti-Drop Technology, and during the demos, the brand confidently highlighted drop resistance of up to 2 metres. The phone also carries SGS Triple Resistant certification, covering drop resistance, water resistance, and overall structural durability.

HONOR confirmed the X9D comes with an IP65 rating, meaning it’s protected against dust and water jets — not something you usually see emphasized this strongly in the mid-range category.

In hand, the phone feels solid without being bulky. Despite its toughness-first design, it still manages to look clean and modern, with a slim profile and curved edges that stop it from feeling like a rugged phone pretending to be stylish.

A Battery Built for People Who Hate Charging

Battery life was another major focus during the launch, and for good reason.

The HONOR X9D packs a massive 6 600 mAh battery, and HONOR repeatedly positioned this as a phone designed for multi-day use, not just “all-day” use. Based on the figures shared at the event, this device is clearly aimed at users who want to go as long as possible without reaching for a charger.

When you do need to plug in, the phone supports 66 W HONOR SuperCharge, which should make topping up far less painful than the battery size might suggest.

For students, commuters, field workers, or anyone who simply doesn’t want battery anxiety — this could easily be one of the X9D’s biggest selling points.

Display, Performance & Everyday Use

Up front, the X9D features a large 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, delivering smooth scrolling and vibrant colours. HONOR also highlighted the panel’s high peak brightness, which should make it easier to use outdoors — something I’m keen to test properly in real-world conditions.

Performance is handled by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset, paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, depending on configuration. This isn’t a gaming-first powerhouse, but it’s clearly tuned for reliable daily performance, social media, video streaming, multitasking, and light gaming without drama.

The phone runs MagicOS (based on Android), with HONOR continuing to build out its AI-assisted features aimed at usability rather than novelty.

Cameras That Focus on Practical Results

Camera performance wasn’t positioned as the headline feature, but the X9D still brings a capable setup to the table.

The main camera is a 108 MP sensor, designed to deliver detailed shots in good lighting, with AI enhancements to help in tougher scenarios. HONOR also demonstrated its built-in photo tools — including AI-powered editing features — which aim to reduce the need for third-party apps.

Around the front, there’s a 16 MP selfie camera, housed neatly in the display, keeping the overall look clean and modern.

This is clearly a camera system designed for reliable everyday shots, rather than competing with flagship photography monsters — and HONOR seems comfortable owning that positioning.

Pricing, Availability & First Impressions

At the launch, HONOR confirmed that the HONOR X9D will be available in South Africa from [INSERT DATE], with pricing starting at R9999 depending on configuration.

Walking away from the event, my biggest takeaway is that the X9D feels intentionally practical. It’s not trying to be everything to everyone instead, it focuses on battery life, durability, and a smooth everyday experience.

Once we get it in for full testing, the real story will be how well those promises hold up in daily use. But based on what was shown at the launch and my initial hands-on time, the HONOR X9D looks like a strong option for users who want a phone they don’t have to baby.

A full review is coming soon.
