The Biggest TV Buying Question Isn’t How Big Your Screen Should Be

Johannesburg, 29 July 2026 | As televisions become bigger, brighter and more technologically advanced, the way consumers think about picture quality is changing too. For many South Africans, buying a new TV is no longer simply about finding the biggest screen that fits the living room. Increasingly, the conversation is shifting towards what makes an image look better: from deeper blacks and brighter highlights to more accurate, consistent colour.

The challenge is that television technology has become increasingly complex, with terms such as OLED, QLED, Mini LED and Quantum Dot competing for consumers’ attention. For the average shopper, understanding what those technologies actually mean can be difficult.

According to TCL South Africa, the next evolution in Mini LED technology is now putting greater emphasis on the relationship between brightness, colour and precise light control.

“Consumers are becoming more knowledgeable about display technology, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the buying process has become easier,” says Alvin Wang, General Manager of TCL South Africa. “There are more technologies and specifications to consider than ever before, and ultimately, consumers want to know what difference those innovations will actually make when they sit down to watch a movie, follow a sports match or play a game.”

Beyond Brightness

Brightness has become one of the most talked-about aspects of modern television technology, particularly as consumers increasingly watch high-dynamic-range content designed to showcase a wider range between the brightest highlights and darkest shadows.

However, brightness alone does not necessarily translate into a better picture. The ability to control where that light appears on screen is just as important. This is where Mini LED technology has evolved, using a much larger number of smaller LEDs to provide more precise control over different areas of the screen.

TCL’s latest SQD-Mini LED technology takes this approach further through what the company calls Precise Dimming Zones and its All-domain Halo Control Technology, designed to improve control over light and shadow while reducing unwanted blooming around bright objects. The technology combines this with Super QLED and an Ultra Colour Filter Panel to deliver what TCL describes as more stable colour performance across different scenes.

“The real conversation around picture quality is no longer simply about how bright a television can get,” says Wang. “It’s about how effectively the TV can manage the relationship between light, dark and colour at the same time. That is where technologies like SQD-Mini LED are interesting, because they are focused on improving the overall picture rather than one specification in isolation.”

Why Colour Matters More Than You Think

For consumers, colour can be one of the easiest ways to notice a difference between televisions, but it is also one of the most difficult aspects to assess from a specification sheet.

TCL’s SQD-Mini LED technology, for example, incorporates Super Quantum Dot technology and an Ultra Colour Filter, with the company highlighting the technology’s ability to deliver a wide colour gamut while maintaining colour stability across different types of content. The technology is designed to reduce colour cross-talk between adjacent zones, helping to maintain more consistent colours while improving light control.

In practical terms, this is about more than making colours look brighter. It is about ensuring that the deep blue of a night sky, the subtle shades of a skin tone or the vibrant colours of a sporting event remain convincing across the entire picture.

“Consumers don’t necessarily need to understand every technical detail behind a display,” says Wang. “What matters is that they can see the difference. Whether you’re watching a visually spectacular film or something as simple as a football match, good picture technology should make the content feel more natural, more detailed and more immersive.”

Mini LED Moves Into Its Next Chapter

TCL’s SQD-Mini LED range includes models such as the C7L and C8L, with specifications varying by model and screen size. The C8L, for example, combines SQD-Mini LED with Super QLED, a WHVA 2.0 Ultra Panel and Bang & Olufsen audio, while the C7L brings the same broader SQD-Mini LED platform to a more accessible point in the range.

The C8L is available in South Africa in 75-inch, 85-inch and 98-inch screen sizes, while the local C7L range spans multiple large-format options. Features such as peak brightness and the number of Precise Dimming Zones vary depending on the model and screen size, making it important for consumers to look at the specifications of the specific TV they are considering rather than treating a technology name as a guarantee of identical performance across an entire range.

“Television technology is moving at an incredible pace, and consumers are becoming more discerning about what they bring into their homes,” Wang concludes. “The opportunity now is to look beyond the size of the screen and understand the technology that sits behind it. The goal should always be the same: to create a better viewing experience that makes the content you love look and feel its best.”

As the television market continues to evolve, the question for consumers may no longer be simply how big should my TV be?Instead, it could increasingly become: how good do I want the picture to look?

HONOR Brings ARRI Cinematic Workflow to Mobile Creation at Imaging Technology Launch

HONOR introduces its AiMAGE chip-device-cloud imaging engine, announces a joint imaging technology lab with ARRI, and brings ARRI LogC3, ARRI Wide Gamut 3 and ARRI Looks to the HONOR Robot Phone

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 29 July 2026 – Global AI device ecosystem company HONOR yesterday hosted the HONOR Imaging Technology Launch in Hengdian in China, introducing its latest mobile imaging technologies and outlining how professional cinema workflow can be adapted for mobile creation.

At the event, HONOR introduced the Optics-Intelligence Evolution principle behind its imaging strategy, showcased its HONOR AiMAGE chip-device-cloud imaging engine, and announced a joint imaging technology lab with ARRI. The launch also brought together Harald Brendel, ARRI Director Image Science; Claudio Miranda, Academy Award Winner; Wang Boxue, Cinematographer; Luo Wei, HONOR Chief Imaging Engineer; and Zhao Fuchen, HONOR Imaging Cognition Expert, to discuss how professional cinema technologies and creative workflows can be brought closer to mobile creators.

The launch marks a significant evolution in HONOR’s imaging strategy. Instead of focusing only on camera specifications, HONOR is building a more complete mobile imaging technology system across professional image capture, AI-powered processing, cinematic color science and creator-focused workflows.

“Mobile imaging has long been caught in a race around pixels, sensors and hardware specifications,” said Luo Wei, HONOR Chief Imaging Engineer. “But in an era where everyone is creating video, users need more than technical parameters. They need imaging tools that can carry their full creative intent and help them produce work with emotion, story and cinematic expression. This is the original purpose of HONOR AiMAGE: to give every user greater freedom to record and express.”

HONOR AiMAGE: Building a Full-Chain Imaging Engine

At the keynote, HONOR introduced the Optics-Intelligence Evolution principle, summarised by the idea that “optics is the foundation, and intelligence raises the ceiling.” For HONOR, mobile imaging progress depends on the combined evolution of physical image capture and intelligent processing: optical and sensor capabilities define the foundation of image quality, while AI, algorithms and cloud capabilities amplify what users can create.

To support this direction, HONOR has built a chip-device-cloud AiMAGE imaging engine that connects the full imaging chain from physical capture to intelligent creation.

On the chip side, HONOR is developing a self-developed Transformer-based native AI ISP to reconstruct the image processing pipeline from the ground up. This works alongside a next-generation pixel array and EVS sensor technology, designed to improve original image capture and provide stronger input for AI imaging.

On the device side, HONOR is combining physical imaging hardware with real-time algorithms. This includes a self-developed titanium alloy three-axis gimbal, precision sensing hardware, optical technologies and real-time image processing algorithms, enabling deeper coordination between hardware stabilisation, image quality and motion control.

On the cloud side, HONOR is expanding imaging capabilities through RAW-domain image enhancement, spatial imaging technologies and Imaging Agent tools. These cloud-based capabilities are designed to break through device-side computing limits and support the full creative process from shooting and optimisation to intelligent content generation.

Extending ARRI Image Science and Professional Workflows to Mobile Creation

Through its Strategic Technology Cooperation with ARRI, HONOR is integrating selected elements of professional cinema workflow into mobile imaging. This includes ARRI LogC3, ARRI Wide Gamut 3 and ARRI Looks, bringing a more professional color and workflow foundation to the HONOR Robot Phone.

Unlike simple filters, LogC3 and Looks are part of a professional imaging workflow. LogC3 is designed to preserve more brightness and color information for post-production, while ARRI Wide Gamut 3 provides a broader color space and ARRI Looks help creators apply controlled cinematic styles. Together, these technologies support a workflow that gives creators greater flexibility from capture to editing, while helping mobile footage retain more creative information.

“For more than a century, ARRI has helped filmmakers turn technology into compelling visual stories,” said Harald Brendel, ARRI Director Image Science. “Our work with HONOR is not about a simple brand collaboration or a filter pack. It is about bringing professional cinema color standards and workflow thinking into mobile creation. Together, we are exploring how ARRI Image Science and professional workflows can help more creators capture images with greater consistency, control and creative intent.”

To deepen the cooperation, HONOR and ARRI also announced a joint imaging technology lab. The lab will focus on three key areas: sensor-level optics and dynamic range, end-to-end cinema industry workflow from capture to post-production, and imaging realism and aesthetic standards in the AI era. Through the lab, HONOR and ARRI aim to explore how professional cinema principles can inform the next stage of mobile imaging technology.

Professional Filmmakers Put Mobile Imaging into Real Creative Scenarios

The launch also featured perspectives from renowned filmmakers and cinematographers, including Claudio Miranda, Academy Award Winner, and Wang Boxue, Cinematographer, who shared how mobile imaging tools can support more flexible professional creation.

At the event, HONOR invited Claudio Miranda to use the HONOR Robot Phone to recreate a cinematic scene, demonstrating how mobile imaging can help lower the barrier to professional-style visual creation. From a professional creator’s perspective, Miranda shared his view on how mobile devices can become more capable tools for capturing cinematic images in everyday scenarios.

HONOR also showcased a short film shot by Wang Boxue using the HONOR Robot Phone in an extremely confined one-shot scenario. Drawing on real production experience, Wang highlighted how the Robot Phone’s colour reproduction and compact form factor can support professional post-production workflows while giving creators more freedom in camera movement and scene design.

“Colour consistency and workflow compatibility are critical in professional production,” said Wang Boxue, Cinematographer. “What impressed me is not only the image quality, but also how a compact mobile device can enter spaces that traditional camera setups cannot. This gives creators more freedom in camera movement and helps reduce the burden of production while expanding creative possibilities.”

Expanding HONOR’s Mobile Imaging Ecosystem

At the launch, HONOR also announced the judging panel for the HONOR Mobile Imaging Plan – HONOR Magic Stories Awards 2026, the company’s global mobile imaging competition. As an important platform for HONOR’s imaging vision, the competition brings together perspectives from film, visual storytelling and photography to encourage more expressive mobile creation.

HONOR also introduced its “48-Hour Extreme Filmmaking Challenge” at Hengdian World Studios, where creator teams will use HONOR’s latest mobile imaging technologies across demanding filmmaking scenarios, including high-speed parkour, complex one-shot movement and low-angle action sequences. Selected works from the challenge will be showcased at a later stage.

Together, HONOR’s AiMAGE imaging engine, Strategic Technology Cooperation with ARRI, joint imaging technology lab, filmmaker participation and creator programs demonstrate the company’s commitment to advancing professional mobile imaging. By combining physical imaging innovation, AI-powered processing and cinema workflow expertise, HONOR is working to move mobile imaging beyond specification-led competition and toward a new stage of professional-standard creation that remains accessible to more users.

Backed by Hisense South Africa’s established service network, Toshiba TV introduces a curated range of premium televisions and electronic accessories, combining decades of Japanese craftsmanship with advanced display technology.

Toshiba TV has officially entered the South African market, offering consumers access to a carefully curated range of premium televisions and electronic accessories. Combining decades of Japanese engineering excellence with cutting-edge display technology, Toshiba TV delivers exceptional entertainment experiences backed by trusted local service, support, and manufacturing capabilities.

The launch marks a significant addition to South Africa’s consumer electronics landscape, one defined not by volume or noise, but by a deliberate commitment to quality, longevity, and meaningful performance.

Craftsmanship as a Philosophy

Beyond specifications and features, Toshiba TV is shaped by two enduring Japanese principles: monozukuri, the art and soul of making things well, and takumi, the lifelong pursuit of mastery and craft. These values inform every design decision, every engineering choice, and every product in the range.

The result is a product range that prioritises intention over excess, built for consumers who notice the difference between technology that simply functions and technology that genuinely performs.

“The Japan South Africans already admire is built on craftsmanship, integrity, and attention to detail.” shares Luna Nortje, Deputy General Manager at Hisense South Africa. “Those same qualities are embedded in every Toshiba product. We are excited to bring that philosophy into South African homes through a range that combines premium technology with timeless design.”

The multi Prime Time Emmy Award-winning show follows the life of the Smith family as they navigate their everyday family dynamics while simultaneously embarking on spectacular interdimensional adventures through space. Since the show’s release in 2014, fans have come to love the show for its fantastical storylines, hysterical humour, signature animation style, and relatable domestic dramas. Packed with self-referential in-jokes, it has achieved both cult status and widespread acclaim.

All three voice actors will appear for the first three days of the festival, from Thursday 24 to Saturday 26 September.

New Dedicated Viewfinder and XLR Handle Unit Also Available

(SOUTH AFRICA, 23 July 2026) – Sony introduces the FX5, a new full-frame camera in its Cinema Line series. The camera is equipped with a newly developed fully stacked CMOS image sensor and further enhances sensitivity performance[i] through 15+ stops of dynamic range, a Dual Gain Shooting[ii] mode, and three base ISO settings. For the first time in the Cinema Line FX series, it supports Open Gate shooting as well as in-camera recording in X-OCN, Sony’s proprietary RAW format. The camera is capable of shooting in 5K at up to 60 frames per second, in 4K up to 120 frames per second and in FHD up to 240 frame per second. These features bring together the Cinema Line look[iii] and operability designed to meet the needs of production environments in a compact, highly portable body. This release will also include two new optional accessories: a detachable OLED viewfinder and an XLR Handle that enables recording in-camera at up to 96 kHz, 32-bit float. The camera system incorporates expertise that Sony has cultivated through the development of Cinema Line cameras, which have earned high praise from cinematographers and video creators around the world.

Claudio Miranda, ASC, cinematographer of films including “Top Gun: Maverick” and “F1® The Movie,” conducted a test shoot with FX5: “I felt that FX5 is a camera that combines high quality image expression and mobility in a compact body, enabling people to use it across a wide range of shooting environments.

Director Gareth Edwards (The Creator, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Jurassic World: Rebirth) also had an opportunity to shoot with the new camera for a project that spanned across Cambodia, Thailand, and Nepal. “Guerrilla filmmaking just went to the next level, the FX5 is the run-and-gun cinema camera to beat.”

The project is available on YouTube.

FX5 Key Features

A newly developed full-frame fully stacked CMOS image sensor and the latest high-speed image processing engine

The camera is equipped with a full-frame fully stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS image sensor and the latest high-speed BIONZ XR2™ image processing engine, which includes a dedicated AI processing unit.

When shooting in S-Log3, the camera achieves 15+ stops of dynamic range. The broad latitude and low-noise performance enable seamless roll-off from highlights to shadows and natural texture reproduction, even in high-contrast scenes.

Three Base ISOs of ISO 800, ISO 4000, and ISO 12800 enable low-noise image expression under a wide range of conditions. The Dual Gain Shooting function2, supported for the first time in the FX series, maximizes the performance of the image sensor to enable smooth gradation reproduction with even wider latitude, while effectively reducing noise without compromising shadow detail.

For the first time in the FX series, the camera supports 3:2 full-pixel readout across the entire image sensor area, or Open Gate shooting[iv], as well as a wide variety of image scan modes including 17:9, 16:9, and Super 35mm. This allows flexible angle-of-view selection according to creative intent and delivery format. In addition, support for in-camera recording in X-OCN, Sony’s proprietary 16-bit scene-linear RAW format, enables high-quality recording without the need for an external recorder. In addition to X-OCN LT, the camera supports newly added X-OCN C1 and X-OCN C2 codecs. By reducing data size, these codecs enable high-speed transfer of high-quality images and reduce data volume, helping streamline post-production workflows.

High-precision AF powered by AI and detailed settings that support intentional shooting

Subject recognition using AI-based human pose estimation technology allows the camera to accurately detect not only the position of a person’s eyes, but also the position of the body and head, delivering high AF performance even in dark scenes. The camera also supports Real-time Tracking, which automatically tracks subjects and enables stable focus work.

When shooting with Auto Tracing White Balance (ATW), the camera uses information from visible light and IR (infrared) sensors, as well as deep learning-based light source estimation, to identify scenes with high accuracy. It achieves more stable[v] and natural white balance in shaded areas, indoor scenes, and other situations.

The camera supports noise Suppression settings (ON/OFF), enabling flexible image creation according to shooting intent and post-production workflows.

The camera also features a de-squeeze function that supports anamorphic lenses, enabling shooting with 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x, and 2.0x anamorphic lenses.

Excellent operability and high mobility in a compact body

The camera adopts a compact, lightweight body with a flat-top design and flexibly supports a variety of shooting styles including handheld shooting, gimbal operation, and shooting in confined spaces.

The camera also features 5-axis optical in-body image stabilization. With the latest image stabilization unit, the roll correction range has been expanded to approximately twice that of the previous system5, effectively suppressing rotational blur. In addition to optical image stabilization and Active Mode, the camera features Dynamic Active Mode[vi], enabling stable image expression even during handheld shooting.

When combined with the newly developed XLR handle unit, the camera supports high-quality audio recording of up to 96 kHz, 32-bit float, and 4 audio channels. It is also compatible with the optional 0.58-type tilting OLED viewfinder[vii], which enables accurate monitoring even in bright environments.

The camera features a 3.5-type, approximately 2.76-million-dot, 16:9 touch-panel 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor, larger than that of FX3. The fully articulating monitor tilts approximately 98 degrees upward and approximately 40 degrees downward and opens approximately 180 degrees sideways. It uses a high-brightness panel with brightness adjustable in 15 steps. Various shooting information can be displayed around the top, bottom, left, and right sides of the screen so that it does not overlap with the shooting image. In addition, the BIG6 home screen, which inherits operability cultivated through CineAlta cameras, consolidates key settings such as frame rate, exposure, and LUTs, providing an operating environment that allows creators to focus on shooting.

The camera is equipped with a new menu system, enabling shooting with similar operability when used together with CineAlta cameras or FX6.

High reliability and expandability to support professional production environments

A high-efficiency cooling fan with enhanced cooling performance and an optimized heat dissipation design enable stable operation even during long-duration video recording. The cooling fan is placed in an independent air chamber. Together with a dust- and moisture-resistant design, this enhances reliability in outdoor and demanding shooting environments.

The lightweight and highly rigid body includes screw holes in various locations for directly attaching accessories, allowing flexible shooting systems to be configured without the use of a cage.

Through integration with the Monitor & Control application, the camera supports video monitoring and remote operation from smartphones, tablets, and Mac. Output from the HDMI terminal on the camera body can display different information on the camera monitor and an external monitor, or the same information on both.

The camera is compatible with the recently released high-capacity rechargeable battery pack NP-SA100 (2670 mAh). With approximately 1.3 times the power capacity of the Z-series NP-FZ100 battery, it supports long-duration shooting. Battery life has been improved through power management coordinated with the camera, and the camera also supports display of the battery pack’s deterioration status.

The camera is equipped with two USB Type-C™︎ ports. In addition to supporting timecode input via an optional timecode adapter cable, it supports external power supply via USB Power Delivery (PD)[viii], enabling stable long-duration video shooting.

The camera also features a wired LAN terminal, enabling remote camera operation and stable network connection. It provides the high expandability required in professional production network environments.

Planned Update ver. 2.0 (August 2027 or later)[ix]

Updates are planned to add support for HFR shooting up to 240 fps in X-OCN, XAVC S-I recording in a 3:2 aspect ratio (Open Gate shooting), an optimized user interface for vertical shooting, and a frame grab function.

Accessibility and environmental considerations

The camera is equipped with accessibility features that support visual recognition and camera operation, including a screen reader function[x] that reads menus aloud and an enlarged display function for menus. In addition, the mount index, multi-function dial, and buttons are designed for ease of use through shape and tactile feel, without relying solely on visual confirmation.

Approximately 30% or more of the parts used in the camera are made from recycled plastic[xi]. In addition, the production sites in Thailand and China that manufacture this camera, operate using 100% renewable energy[xii]. Sony also uses plant-derived nonwoven fabric for bags that wrap products and other items[xiii], reducing the amount of plastic used in packaging and helping lower environmental impact.

Optional Accessories

0.58-type OLED Detachable Viewfinder DVF-EL1

This detachable viewfinder is equipped with a 0.58-type, approximately 7.07-million-dot high-resolution OLED panel7. It supports HDR display with a colour gamut equivalent to DCI-P3 and 10-bit gradation. The wide colour gamut enables accurate confirmation of subject colours, while HDR display allows precise confirmation of details when shooting and playing back landscapes or subjects with high contrast.

The viewfinder achieves a high level of immersion with approximately 0.9x magnification[xiv] and supports switching between display modes that prioritize resolution or eye point.

It also features a tilt mechanism that moves from 0 degrees to approximately 90 degrees upward, enabling flexible and comfortable monitoring during low-angle, high-angle, and handheld shooting.

XLR Handle Unit XLR-H2

This XLR handle unit is equipped with two XLR/TRS combo terminals and supports up to 4-channel audio input. It features dual AD converters that digitally convert audio signal input from microphones with high precision and wide dynamic range and enables recording in-camera at up to 96 kHz, 32-bit float.

South Africans have become experts at doing mental maths. Every trip to the petrol station comes with a moment of disbelief. The grocery bill somehow climbs higher despite the trolley looking suspiciously similar to last month’s. Electricity, insurance, school fees, data, subscriptions. It often feels as though the cost of simply getting through the month keeps finding new ways to increase.

As South Africans become more selective about their technology purchases, devices such as the HUAWEI nova 15 Max are helping to redefine what value in a smartphone really means. Starting at R7 999, the smartphone combines an 8500mAh battery, durable construction, advanced photography features and a HUAWEI Added Value Pack worth up to R7 596, challenging the assumption that consumers need to spend more to get more from their devices.

As a result, consumers are becoming increasingly selective about where they spend their money. They’re asking tougher questions, comparing options more carefully and looking beyond flashy marketing promises to understand what they’re really getting for their hard-earned rand.

Smartphones are no exception.

The era of paying more for less

Over the past few years, smartphone prices have steadily climbed. Rising component costs, larger memory configurations and increasingly sophisticated technology have all contributed to pushing prices upwards.

Yet for many consumers, the experience hasn’t always improved at the same pace.

Nobody buys a smartphone because it has a particular chip or memory specification. They buy it because they want a device that lasts all day, takes great photos, survives everyday life and helps them stay connected.

The challenge for manufacturers is finding ways to deliver those experiences without forcing consumers into premium price brackets.

The features people actually care about

Ask most smartphone users what frustrates them and the answers are surprisingly consistent. Battery life runs out too quickly. Phones are expensive to repair after a drop. Cameras perform brilliantly in perfect lighting but struggle when life happens after sunset. Screens can be difficult to see outdoors.

These aren’t glamorous problems, but they are the problems people experience every day.

That’s why practical innovation is becoming increasingly important. Rather than chasing specifications for their own sake, many consumers are prioritising features that make a noticeable difference to their daily lives.

Why battery life has become a value feature

As smartphones have become our cameras, GPS devices, entertainment hubs and communication centres, battery performance has become more important than ever. A larger battery doesn’t just mean longer usage. It means fewer charging stops, less reliance on power banks, and more confidence when travelling, working remotely, or spending long days away from home.

The HUAWEI nova 15 Max is a good example of this. Equipped with an 8500mAh HUAWEI Super Battery, it is designed to keep pace with modern lifestyles. Real-world testing shows it can support up to 23 hours of continuous video playback, while reverse charging allows the device to share power with compatible Huawei products when needed.

Getting more without spending more

The conversation around smartphone value is increasingly moving beyond price alone. Consumers still want excellent cameras, durable construction and immersive entertainment experiences. They simply want those features delivered in a way that feels accessible.

The HUAWEI nova 15 Max reflects that changing mindset. Its 50MP Ultra Vision Camera uses Huawei’s advanced RYYB colour filter array to improve light intake by 40%, helping users capture brighter and more detailed images even in challenging lighting conditions. AI Best Expression helps refine group photos, while the Extra-durable Body combines SGS Premium Performance Mark 5-Star Drop Resistance certification with IP65 dust and water resistance.

The device also features a 6.84-inch OLED Eye Comfort Display with up to 4000 nits of dynamic peak brightness, making it easier to enjoy content indoors and outdoors alike.

These are the kinds of features that directly influence everyday ownership rather than simply looking impressive on a specification sheet.

Value isn’t just about the price tag

South Africans have become skilled at spotting the difference between something that is expensive and something that is valuable. Those are not always the same thing. The HUAWEI nova 15 Max arrives at a time when many consumers are actively reconsidering what value means.

Starting at R7 999, the HUAWEI nova 15 Max combines one of the largest batteries in its category, advanced photography capabilities, durable construction and immersive entertainment features in a package designed around real-world use.

Customers also receive a HUAWEI Added Value Pack worth up to R7 596, including Unlimited Screen Damage Protection and HUAWEI FreeBuds SE valued at R1 499 at selected retailers.

At Galaxy Unpacked July 2026 in London, Samsung Electronics unveiled Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Galaxy Watch9, expanding the digital health experience on the wrist. From the moment users wake up to the time they finish a workout and begin recovery, a smartwatch stays in contact with the body throughout the day.

Samsung Newsroom got an early look at the new wearables during Galaxy Unpacked July 2026 — from Galaxy Watch Ultra2, built for precise workout tracking and structured training in demanding environments, to Galaxy Watch9, designed for everyday health management spanning sleep, cardiovascular health, exercise and recovery.

Galaxy Watch Ultra2: Adventure Without Limits

Combining top-tier performance with exceptional durability, Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is optimized for high-intensity sports and outdoor activities.

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is the first Galaxy Watch powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon® Wear Elite Platform,1 delivering fast performance and precise GPS tracking. Its 800mAh battery offers 35% more capacity than the previous generation’s. The display reaches up to 5,000 nits of brightness — a first for a smartwatch — making on-screen information easy to read even under bright lighting.

Comfort has also improved. The cushion design seamlessly integrates the display, bezel and body. Despite its larger battery, the watch is 12% thinner than the previous generation thanks to component optimization and an internal redesign. The band is 26% lighter with a new air pocket structure, providing a secure yet comfortable fit.

Trail Run, a new feature exclusive to Galaxy Watch Ultra2, offers real-time insights including detailed elevation data, climbing progress and cumulative ascent and descent distance. With this information, users can gauge workout intensity and adjust their pace accordingly.

Galaxy Watch Ultra2’s capabilities now extend beneath the surface. From the moment users enter the water, it automatically records depth, dive time and water temperature. Backed by EN13319 certification for diving instruments, along with 10ATM water resistance and an IP69K rating for dust and water resistance, the device is engineered to support safe underwater activities. Furthermore, in collaboration with global diving equipment brand Mares, Galaxy Watch Ultra2 will support advanced diving features — including real-time ascent and descent rates as well as safety decompression time.2

During workouts, users can take advantage of hydration guidance, newly added to Nutrition Alert. Based on sweat loss relative to body weight, it calculates recommended fluid intake in real time to help users stay hydrated during extended exercise sessions.

Galaxy Watch9: A Companion for Everyday Health

Galaxy Watch9 is designed to be an everyday companion for continuous health management. Its slimmer body and band with a new air pocket structure fit comfortably and securely around the wrist, making it ideal for all-day wear — from workouts to sleep.

Powered by the Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, Galaxy Watch9 features a 390mAh battery3 with 20% more capacity than the previous generation’s to support fast performance and consistent health monitoring throughout the day.

▲ (From left) Galaxy Watch9 comes in 40- and 44-millimeter sizes.

The Galaxy Watch series’ digital health experience is centered around the updated Samsung Health, an all-in-one health coach that brings together five core pillars — Activity, Mindfulness, Nutrition, Sleep and Vitals — in one place. By capturing signals from the body and presenting them at a glance, the app helps users stay ahead of their health.▲ The five core pillars of Samsung Health

Sleep is the foundation of health management. The upgraded Sleep Apnea feature analyzes the number of breathing disruptions per hour using an AI algorithm and categorizes them into three levels. It further refines the sleep apnea detection capability that earned Samsung the world’s first De Novo authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2024.

▲ Sleep insights

Key health metrics measured during sleep can be viewed at a glance in Vitals. Using heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, skin temperature, blood oxygen saturation, Galaxy Watch9 establishes a personalized baseline to help identify meaningful changes in health.

Heart Health Score provides an easy-to-understand snapshot of cardiovascular health by combining factors such as activity level, sleep, body composition and stress trends into a single score representing the user’s current condition.

Workout plans can also be tailored to fitness levels. Fitness Index uses body composition and workout history to assess whether a user’s current exercise volume is appropriate, helping set individualized goals. On days with more intensive workouts, Daily Cardio Load helps users assess training balance and determine how much recovery time they need.

▲ Heart Health Score

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 excels in high-intensity training, while Galaxy Watch9 supports everyday health management. Together with enhanced hardware and Samsung Health, the next-generation Galaxy Watch series delivers a smarter, more personalized health experience.
