Tabletop Gaming 101: Get Creative and Get Connected

Comic Con talks a lot about tabletop gaming, but what is it actually? It is not any one thing. Rather it is a diverse range of different kinds of interactive entertainment – provided that it brings people together around an actual table. It encompasses a wide variety of formats, from epic narrative roleplaying adventures to fast-paced card duels, or from strategy games to battles with miniatures on physical landscapes. Whether played casually among friends or competitively at conventions and tournaments, tabletop gaming celebrates collaboration and imagination.

At the heart of tabletop gaming lies roleplaying games, also known as RPGs. They are group experiences where players take on the roles of fictional characters and embark on adventures directed by a Game Master (GM) who narrates the world and writes the main storyline, with play ultimately guided by a rulebook. It could be a world of dragons, ancient kingdoms, or even modern scenarios. It is a collaborative mix of storytelling and improvisation. Dice throws determine some of the action, with higher scores giving positive outcomes, and lower numbers seeing the storyline not quite going the player’s way! The most well-known example of RPGs is Dungeons & Dragons, which was introduced in 1974.

Another layer to tabletop gaming is card games. Some card games emphasize luck and social interaction, while others require careful planning, deck-building, and a lot of tactical foresight. Collectible card games allow players to curate personalized decks and compete in dynamic, evolving matches. These are games like Yu Gi Oh!, Pokémon TCG, and the famous Magic The Gathering.

Tabletop gaming also includes miniature wargaming, where players use tiny models of humans and beasties to simulate battles on scaled-down battlefields. Part of the enjoyment is painting these figurines, with fans carefully holding the slimmest of paintbrushes and the tiniest pots of specialised paint in order to get the perfect look (you can watch this in live action at Comic Con Cape Town). The tools of miniature wargaming include dice, terrain pieces, and measuring tools. With miniature wargaming players can recreate historical conflicts as well as imaginative fantasy or science-fiction battles.

Tabletop Gaming at Comic Con Cape Town with Unplug Yourself

Unplug Yourself is Comic Con’s partner in tabletop gaming. They can be found in the Protea Room where they will be hosting three-hour Dungeons & Dragons sessions. No experience is necessary – their experienced Game Masters are ready to teach you if you’re a newbie. Just bring your imagination.

For those with a shorter attention span, Unplug Yourself has Quick Encounters – thrilling one-shot adventures packed with mystery, monsters, and epic moments – characters and dice provided. Players will be entered into a raffle to win a Dungeons & Dragons inspired raffle on Day Four, 3 May.

Unplug Yourself Ultimate Bingo Adventure

For even more tabletop-inspired delight, fans can grab an Unplug Yourself bingo card. This is fans’ chance to explore the convention in a whole new way. Fans will check off fun challenges on their bingo card – like learning to play a trading card game (TCG), trying a new title, or snapping a pic of yourself playing tabletop with a friend. Daily raffles for the participants have awesome prizes on offer.

The Unplug Yourself zone and activities require an additional ticket purchase, which can be made at https://www.quicket.co.za/events/?search=%20Unplug%20Yourself

This year Comic Con Cape Town will welcome 36,000 fans at the CTICC 2 from 30 April to 3 May. Some of them will be new to tabletop gaming, but now that you’ve taken TTG 101, you’ll know what to expect.

Cape Town International Animation Festival Launches its Programme at Comic Con Cape Town

Comic Con Cape Town continues its successful partnership with the Cape Town International Animation Festival (CTIAF) in 2026. The two shows have been sister festivals since the launch of Comic Con Cape Town in 2023, consistently bringing engaging workshops and practical educational content to the tens of thousands of fans walking through the Con’s doors annually, this year from 30 April to 3 May at CTICC 2.

CTIAF is the largest dedicated African Animation Festival on the continent, and it is all about celebrating the art of animation and helping the next generation of animators to learn, grow, and up their skill sets. The festival has hosted Academy Award-winning artists and directors, sparked co-productions, and helped launch projects that became worldwide successes. It’s a natural fit with Comic Con, which aims to shine a spotlight on local talent, and to uplift local artists and creators.

Cape Town continues to make its mark on animation globally – think Sunrise Studios’ box office hit David – and Comic Con Cape Town attracts fans, teenagers, and adults who want to explore these creative industries and learn how to make a career in them. CTIAF is the perfect place to start to learn more about what it means to work in animation, and the Festival has its own workshop zone at Comic Con Cape Town in 2026.

This CTIAF workshops and screenings are included in a Comic Con Cape Town ticket. One screening and two workshops will take place daily at the Con in Hall 8 at the CTIAF stage. In collaboration with leading educational institutions SAE Institute South Africa and The Animation School, the program offers hands-on learning experiences designed specifically for ages 12 to 18.

“This initiative is about access and inspiration,” says Shani Campbell, Academic head of The Animation school. “By partnering with top-tier animation schools and bringing this program to Comic Con, we’re opening doors for young creatives to explore careers in animation and storytelling.”

Says Cameron Lawry of SAE Institute, “Whether aspiring artists are picking up a pencil for the first time or already experimenting with digital tools, these workshops provide a unique opportunity to learn, create, and be inspired in an exciting, immersive environment”

For more information, visit Comic Con Cape Town or the CTIAF platforms: www.comicconcapetown.co.za and www.ctiaf.com.

Toyota Returns as Official Partner of Comic Con Cape Town 2026 with Expanded Gaming Experience

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) is pleased to announce the renewal of its partnership with Comic Con Cape Town as official event partner. The event is set to take place from 30 April to 3 May 2026 at the CTICC 2. The partnership reinforces Toyota’s long‑term strategy to connect with digitally engaged audiences through innovation, gaming, and experiential marketing.

Now in its fifth consecutive year, the partnership has evolved from traditional event sponsorship into a strategic platform that connects Toyota with youth culture, esports growth, and digital lifestyle communities. Central to the partnership is The Toyota Gaming Engine (TTGE), Toyota’s flagship esports and gaming platform designed to make competitive gaming accessible, inclusive, and engaging for audiences of all levels.

At Comic Con Cape Town 2026, TTGE will once again host its flagship interactive stand, featuring free‑to‑play tournaments and Mini Cup competitions across leading gaming titles including EA FC, Street Fighter, Clash Royale, Subway Surfers and Brawlhalla. Participants will compete daily for incentives including R6 000 in shopping vouchers.

“At Toyota South Africa Motors, we are focused on building meaningful connections with the next generation of South Africans by aligning with the platforms and communities that shape their passions and digital lives. Our continued partnership with Comic Con Cape Town allows us to move beyond brand visibility into sustained engagement, using gaming and esports as a strategic channel to build long‑term relevance, affinity and innovation‑led perception for the Toyota brand,” said Tasneem Lorgart, General Manager Marketing Communications.

Through TTGE, Toyota continues to position itself at the intersection of mobility, technology, and entertainment. The platform enables meaningful brand interaction by offering entry‑level and structured esports formats that lower barriers to participation while delivering high‑impact engagement at scale.

A popular crowd highlight, the TTGE Gran Turismo Musical Chairs activation returns to the main stage, delivering fast‑paced, tag‑team racing entertainment for 30 minutes each day. The experience positions sim‑racing as a spectator‑friendly gateway into competitive gaming and motorsport culture, an authentic brand intersection for Toyota.

Comic Con Cape Town has something for everyone, and that includes loads of fun activities for kids – even without the KidsCon Zone. And the great news is that kids five and under get free access. Here are the top kid-friendly things to do at the Western Cape’s largest pop culture and gaming convention.

Dress-Up AKA Cosplay for Kids

Kids can dress-up as their favourite characters, just like the grown-ups do! Cosplay is not only for adults. It’s also for kids – although they may call it dressing-up. Donning the outfit of their favourite superhero character brings great benefits to little ones, as they learn creativity, interact with other kids, act out their characters, and make friends. The moment that cape or mask is on, the confidence kicks in. Who wouldn’t be confident if they knew they were Batman? Kids can also sign up for the daily casual Cosplay competitions which take place on the prestigious Main Stage of Comic Con Cape Town.

Get Gaming with RGB Gaming

RGB Gaming in the Experience Hall upstairs is #WhereGamingAndEducationMeet. RGB Gaming’s mission is to promote sustainable esports in schools by engaging learners in fun competitive games like Minecraft and Fortnite. Participating in esports helps kids to get better at teamwork, and to learn problem-solving and strategic skills. Kids can join in free-to-play tournaments and win awesome prizes each day.

Animation Workshops

Animation workshops are hosted daily by the Cape Town International Animation Fair. Designed for young ones aged 12 to 18, these workshops explore topics such as building 3D gaming worlds, turning drawings into animations, and how to make comics, all explained in easy-to-understand ways. They take place daily from 10h00 to 12h00 and 14h00 to 16h00 in the Experience Hall upstairs.

Play with Solarpop

On the ground floor, Solarpop is bringing back the Scarlet & Violet Academy. In this welcoming area, kids, parents, and newbies can learn the basics of the Pokémon trading card game, taught by experienced trainers who can answer any and all questions. Freak Marble racing will be happening in this area too – there are awesome prizes to be won for the kids whose marbles take poll position.

Toy Shopping

The show floor is full of all sorts of collectibles and toys. Every kid will find something they just have to take home with them. The Build-A-Bear Workshop is around to bring the little ones’ dream teddy bear to life, from stuffing to clothing. Exciting toy shops include Polkadot Pie selling their Doodle Mats, the Snow Aurora shop, and also Takealot will be on the show floor with the latest toys and games. Toy Click on the ground floor has a wide range of Hot Wheels and other toys to take home. Upstairs kids can grab exciting sponge art supplies from Rainbow Art and the coolest new stationery at Deli Stationery, boardgames from Riddle Me This, and more toys from Taco Toys. Sakura has anime-themed toys and gifts, while the Silver Toy Shop sells Pokémon, LEGO and Hot Wheels. All of the FunkoPops await at the Funko store – and of course, the cutest ever Noodle & Bun plushies will be there waiting for a cuddle. Loads of storybooks can be found at Exclusive Books. Exploring the stands and picking a favourite must-have-item is all part of the journey at Comic Con.

Sea Harvest

The Sea Harvest Fish Finger Mealtime Heroes are back! Captain Crisp, Omega Mind, and the Incredible Hake can’t wait to meet everyone, and they’re bringing along some awesome prizes and fun games. These three unconventional heroes are loads of fun – and they’ll be hanging out tasty samples to con-goers too.

Character Meet-and-Greets

Favourite characters come to life at Comic Con Cape Town. Kids can meet well-known, beloved friends in real life that they would normally only see on TV or read about in the pages of their storybooks. The cutest cat and dog duo, Noodle & Bun, and the legendary Minions will be walking the halls of the Con, ready to take photos and give high fives – not to forget all the incredible Cosplayers that fill the halls.

This year Comic Con Cape Town will welcome 36,000 fans to the CTICC 2. It’s a safe, exciting, colourful, and inclusive environment where kids can be themselves.

Capitec’s Fandom Force Puts Local Talent and Fans in the Spotlight

Capitec Bank has stepped into the world of Comic Con Cape Town with purpose and imagination, and a clear commitment to understanding the fans and their fandoms. The festival’s headline sponsor is not simply taking up space at the Mother City’s largest and most vibrant pop culture event. Rather, Capitec is choosing to become a part of Comic Con’s fabric by embracing those found at the very heart of its ethos: the artists who bring everything to life.

Capitec wants to connect with the Comic Con audience in a way that goes far beyond merely adding their logo to the mix. It is about gaining a deeper understanding of who Comic Con fans are and what they want from their Con experience. By engaging with the fandoms and fans that Comic Con serves in spaces designed especially for them, Capitec is choosing authenticity.

The bank’s response comes to life through the creation of the Fandom Force, a brand-new team of Capitec superheroes imagined and illustrated by up-and-coming South African comic book artist Anand Ramcheron. Rather than emulating a global aesthetic or relying on generic visuals, Capitec has chosen to invest in homegrown talent to imagine something that is rooted in the culture that Comic Con Cape Town celebrates.

Anand Ramcheron is a freelance illustrator from Durban, and a graduate of The Kubert School, a highly prestigious school focussing on cartooning and graphic art. He specializes in illustration, visual development, and comics. Anand’s talent has led to him working with prominent clients like Marvel Comics, DC, Sony Pictures Animation, Passion Pictures, and Second Dinner studios, designing covers, concept art, and trading cards for various projects.

By leaning into the superhero theme which is so central to Comic Con, Capitec reveals their deeper intention. These characters are not mascots: they are symbols of Capitec’s intention to create partnership and support creativity, and their desire to show that Capitec knows that the fans are the ultimate heroes. Capitec is coming in with force to uplift the Comic Con attendees’ experiences with endless possibilities.

By collaborating with a local artist, Capitec is making it clear that it understands the importance of representation within fandom. In Anand’s work, there is an authenticity that speaks directly to the Comic Con audience, who appreciates something created with care versus when it is simply applied as surface level marketing. Anand’s visual language is familiar, respectful, and proudly local.

Says Anand, “I was tasked with bringing Capitec Bank’s vision for their superhero campaign to life, designing characters and a cover illustration that captured their unique vibe. It was a lot of fun and also a creative challenge that allowed me to explore new styles and techniques. I hope this, in some small way, opens the door for more companies to see the value in hiring artists instead of using generative AI to solve their creative problems.”

This approach reflects a broader philosophy behind Capitec’s involvement. It is leaning into the spirit of Comic Con Cape Town, seeking ways to add genuine value to the fan experience and to integrate with them. The Fandom Force is just the beginning, and an entry point into a wider journey of engagement that aims to surprise and connect with fans on their own terms.

As the partnership unfolds over the next three years, fans can expect to see the Fandom Force evolve, appearing across activations, storytelling moments, and on-the-ground experiences that blur the line between brand and narrative. It acknowledges that at Comic Con, everyone is part of the story.

Says Comic Con Show Director Carla Massmann, “Comic Con has always been, first and foremost, about the fans. What makes this collaboration with Capitec so meaningful is the way they’ve chosen to show up by participating in a way that is authentic. From working with local artists to creating original characters, they’ve taken the time to understand what matters to our audience and to build something that genuinely adds to their experience. Their approach is about enhancing the journey for every person who attends, making it more engaging, more rewarding, and more memorable. That alignment is what turns a sponsorship into a true partnership, and it’s what will make this collaboration so special over the next few years.”

Says Ruddy Gatare, Marketing Manager Capitec Brand, “We’re incredibly excited to see this collaboration come to life, and we can’t wait for Comic Con fans to experience it and engage with the story we’ve created with Anand Ramcheron. This has been a true partnership, bringing together his unique creative perspective and our ambition to build something that feels authentic to the culture of Comic Con. Our intention is to connect with fans in a way that goes beyond presence, by contributing something meaningful to engage with, while also creating real opportunities to spotlight and support local creative talent along the way.”

In choosing to meet fans where their passions lie, Capitec is not only strengthening its presence within the event, it is helping to shape its future. And in a space defined by imagination, that may be the most powerful superpower of all.

Comic Con Cape Town has built its reputation on celebrating creativity in all its forms, from cosplay and gaming to anime, tabletop battlegrounds, film, television, and, of course, comic books and art. In 2026 the con will host 36,000 fans at the CTICC 2.

High Stakes: National HSEL and eDiski Finals Set for Comic Con Cape Town

Some of South Africa’s most promising young esports talent and top competitive eDiski players will take centre stage at Comic Con Cape Town this year, as the national finals of the Telkom VS Gaming High School Esports League (HSEL) and eDiski tournaments are played live in front of Comic Con audiences.

Taking place from 30 April to 3 May, the finals will bring together the country’s best high school players and elite competitive eDiski players, as months of competition build to a high-energy final weekend where national champions will be crowned on the main stage.

The High School Esports League (HSEL) is Telkom VS Gaming’s national school competition, designed to give young players the opportunity to develop their skills in a competitive environment that promotes learning, growth and fair play. The league features multiple titles including Counterstrike 2, Rocket League, and eDiski, with the HSEL eDiski finals also forming part of the Comic Con Cape Town programme.

The eight finalists competing in the eDiski national finals at Comic Con Cape Town are Air9Nazario, imo99, ZaidApril, Zaheer, GG_Hamza10, RidhaaApril, KK_FUT and K-Mphaka. Notably, GG_Hamza10 returns to the national stage after winning the HSEL eDiski title last year, making him one of the players to watch as the competition unfolds live across the weekend.

“Through HSEL and eDiski, Telkom VS Gaming is creating a clear pathway for players to grow from school-level competition through to the highest levels of competitive play,” said Johann von Backström, Senior Manager: Content and Gaming at Telkom VS Gaming. “Bringing these finals to Comic Con Cape Town is about giving both rising talent and established competitive players a national stage, while giving fans the chance to experience the energy and excitement of competitive gaming live.”

For Comic Con Cape Town fans, the finals offer a chance to experience the intensity of competitive gaming up close, with live matches, shoutcasters, and big-screen gameplay as players compete for national titles on one of the country’s biggest pop culture stages.

As the finals unfold across the weekend, Comic Con Cape Town visitors will have a front-row seat to the future of South African esports, from the next generation of school champions to some of the country’s top competitive eDiski players.

Comic Con Cape Town is The Ultimate Cosplay Celebration

As Cape Town gears up for the unforgettable celebration of creativity and fandom that is Comic Con Cape Town, Cosplayers from all corners of the city are preparing to unveil their creations at the festival.

For those new to the artform, Cosplay is when dressing-up grows up – it’s a combination of costume design and performance art, where participants create incredible replicas of the costumes of their favourite fictitious characters from anime, video games, movies, books, and more. Once dressed in their Cosplay, the performance art kicks in as the Cosplayer brings the attitude of the character to life, acting as if they are the character themselves.

Comic Con Cape Town recognises the talent, skill, and time that goes into creating these walking pieces of art. The Con brings international Cosplayer guests to meet and chat with fans, hosts daily casual competitions, and crowns one overall winner in the Comic Con Cape Town Cosplay Competition.

International Stars of Cosplay

Yaya Han has been Cosplaying since 1999 when it was a niche section of geek-fandom, paving the way for the Cosplayers of today. Over the years she has crafted more than 400 intricate and lavish costumes and is a respected competition judge. Her current focus is on making tools and materials more easily available to the wider community and using Cosplay as a force for good, supporting charitable projects with her work.

Jaremi Carey is a reality TV personality, gamer, host, and transformation artist who has done Cosplay style campaigns for companies like Pokémon International, Fox TV, HBO, and The Last of Us. He has years of experience speaking and judging at Comic Cons around the world, bringing both insight and energy to the stage.

Both Jaremi and Yaya will be featured on the Comic Con Cape Town Main Stage, participating in Q&As, sharing stories about their careers in Cosplay, and meeting fans.

Daily Casual Cosplay Competitions

Casual competitions happen twice a day, every day of Comic Con Cape Town. They take place on the Main Stage, giving fans the opportunity to strut their stuff on the same stage walked by the Con’s international guests. The casual competitions are above all about energy and vibes, and all levels of Cosplay and dress-up are allowed to enter, be they handmade or store-bought. Even better, awesome prizes are up for grabs. Sign-up happens on the same day at the Con’s Cosplay Central.

Comic Con Cape Town Cosplay Competition

This competition is for fully handmade Cosplays only – nothing store-bought, made only by the hands of the Cosplayer wearing it. The Comic Con Cape Town Cosplay Competition is the essential Cosplay title to win in Cape Town. This is where committed Cosplayers get to show off their creations to the Con’s international and local judges, pitting themselves against the best of the best Cosplayers in the City. The lengthy judging process sees contestants show off not only their needlework skills, but also their talents in creating bulky armour and weaponry. 39 contestants will be competing in 2026, and the exciting not-to-be-missed finals take place at 16h00 on the Comic Con Cape Town Main Stage.

Cosplay All Day

Competitions aside, Cosplay is at the heart of the Comic Con Cape Town experience. Many fans come to Comic Con Cape Town purely for the joy of wearing their creations among likeminded friends and communities, and many of the characters look like they’ve just walked off the set of a major film set. Fans come to Comic Con Cape Town to admire these incredible creations and give kudos to the artists wearing them.

Whether you’re competing, creating, or simply soaking it all in, Comic Con Cape Town is the place to celebrate creativity, community, and Cosplay All Day!

Comic Con Cape Town is set to deliver an enhanced festival experience with Capitec in 2026, alongside Capitec meaningfully supporting the creative communities that define the event. Capitec will touch each element of the fan journey, ensuring that every element of the Con -from buying a ticket to exploring the show floor – is simpler, smoother, and more rewarding.

A highlight of the partnership is the Capitec Super Fan Pass, with only 100 passes available exclusively to Capitec clients. The pass includes two event badges, VIP parking, fast-track entry, early access to the Con floor, 50% off one celebrity photo op, and access to the Capitec Super Fan Viewing Zone. On standard Comic Con tickets, Capitec clients can claim a 20% discount, along with special partner deals and discounts at select vendors across the show floor for all fans. Fans will also have access to limited edition Capitec merch. The excitement extends to the Con floor where all fans can participate in an exciting activation unlike anything brought to the festival before.

Beyond enhancing the fan experience, the partnership also reflects Capitec’s commitment to supporting entrepreneurship and creativity. Independent artists, crafters, and small businesses form a vital part of Comic Con’s ecosystem, showcasing their original work and connecting with fans at the festival. Capitec exhibitors receive reduced rates as well as access to Capitec’s business tools and support on site during the festival. This focus on small business aligns closely with the spirit of Comic Con Cape Town, where creativity, innovation, and independent creators are at the heart of the festival experience.

Says Comic Con Show Director Carla Massmann, “By enhancing the fan experience while also supporting the small businesses, artists and creators who make Comic Con Cape Town so special, Capitec is helping us deliver a richer and more rewarding festival for the fans who walk through the doors of Comic Con Cape Town.”

Says Asha Patel, Capitec Head of Brand and Communications, “Comic Con Cape Town is a powerful expression of what happens when people come together around what they genuinely love, whether that’s gaming, art, storytelling or Cosplay. That sense of passion, community and inclusivity resonates deeply with us at Capitec. Our role is to make the experience simpler, more accessible and more rewarding, not only for the fans attending, but also for the creators and small businesses who bring it to life. If we can enable more of our clients to be part of it, and help them unlock even more value from the experience, then we’re doing what matters most.”

Comic Con Cape Town 2026 takes place from 30 April to 3 May at the CTICC 2, to be attended by an estimated 36,000 fans.
