If you’re looking for a laptop that can handle everyday professional work while still being light enough to carry around every day, the MSI Modern 16S AI+ is an interesting option. Priced at just under R24,000 in South Africa, the laptop is aimed squarely at business professionals, students and hybrid workers who spend their days working with documents, spreadsheets, browser tabs, emails and video calls. It also comes with Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC certification, giving it the on-device AI hardware required to run supported AI features locally rather than relying entirely on the cloud. But is the MSI Modern 16S AI+ actually worth buying at this price? After looking at what the laptop offers, here’s where it stands out and where its limitations become apparent.

Who should buy this laptop?

The MSI Modern 16S AI+ makes its target audience fairly obvious. It’s designed for people who prioritise portability, durability and productivity rather than gaming performance. This includes:

Business professionals working with documents, spreadsheets and email

Students handling assignments, research and presentations

Hybrid workers moving between home and the office

Remote workers who rely heavily on video conferencing

Professionals who travel frequently

Users who want a lightweight 16-inch laptop for everyday productivity

MSI Modern 16S AI+ Price in South Africa

The MSI Modern 16S AI+ reviewed here retails for R23,999 in South Africa. The configuration discussed in the review combines the Intel Core Ultra 7 355 processor with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The laptop is available through Takealot, with other local retailers also offering the device. There is also a lower-tier configuration available locally using the Core Ultra 5 322 processor.

The Pros and Cons

Pros

Lightweight 1.7kg design for a 16-inch laptop

MIL-STD-810H durability testing

Copilot+ PC support

Comprehensive port selection

Upgradeable DDR5 memory

Windows Hello support

Firmware TPM 2.0

USB-C fast charging

Cons

Processor isn’t designed for sustained heavy workloads

No discrete graphics so its not suitable for serious gaming

512GB of storage may feel limiting for heavier users

Only one storage slot

Final Verdict

The MSI Modern 16S AI+ is a well-rounded business laptop for users who value portability, durability and productivity. It’s not trying to compete with gaming laptops, and it’s not pretending to be a creator workstation, it knows exactly what it wants to be. Its 1.7kg weight makes it easy to carry, while the MIL-STD-810H durability testing gives it an advantage for professionals who are constantly travelling between locations. The OLED display is another major attraction, while the comprehensive port selection means you’re less likely to need adapters when connecting the laptop to office equipment. Then there’s the Copilot+ PC functionality, which gives the laptop access to Microsoft’s growing ecosystem of on-device AI features. It’s not the laptop to buy for gaming or demanding creative workloads. But that’s not what MSI is targeting. For professionals, students and hybrid workers who spend their days in email, documents, spreadsheets, browser tabs and video conferences, the MSI Modern 16S AI+ makes a strong case for itself at under R24,000. If your priority is a portable 16-inch business laptop that combines modern AI features with practical connectivity and a premium OLED display, the MSI Modern 16S AI+ deserves a place on your shortlist.

MSI’s Raider line has always been the brand’s answer to “what happens if you don’t compromise on a 16-inch gaming laptop.” The Raider 16 Max HX pushes that idea further than any Raider before it, a redesigned, 10% more compact chassis, Intel’s latest Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processor, GPU options running all the way up to an RTX 5090, and a 240Hz OLED display that finally matches the rest of the hardware. This isn’t a laptop built around one headline spec. It’s built around all of them at once.

The Feature Everyone Overlooks

Most coverage of a flagship gaming laptop leads with the GPU. Fair enough, with configurations reaching an RTX 5090, that’s the obvious hook. But the more interesting story here is what MSI did to the chassis itself. The Raider 16 Max HX is 10% more compact than its predecessor, despite housing more powerful internals. And rather than sealing that smaller chassis shut, MSI added a quick-open bottom panel that gives direct access to both RAM slots and both M.2 storage slots — no full teardown, no voided warranty stress, just a straightforward upgrade path as your needs (or storage prices) change. It’s a detail that’s easy to miss next to an RTX 5090 headline, but it’s arguably the more useful long-term feature.

Gaming Experience

With OverBoost engaged, the CPU and GPU can draw up to 300W combined, MSI rates it at 300W max and 280W stable, which matters more than it sounds. A laptop that can hit a high wattage figure once, briefly, isn’t the same as one built to hold it there through a multi-hour session. That’s where the triple-fan, six-heat-pipe cooling system does its actual job: keeping clocks from folding under sustained load rather than just surviving a benchmark run. Paired with the 240Hz OLED panel, the practical result is that frame rate and visual fidelity aren’t fighting each other, a high-refresh panel is only as useful as the GPU feeding it, and here neither side is the bottleneck. The four-speaker Dynaudio system, tuned with Nahimic 3, also means the laptop holds up reasonably well without headphones, which isn’t something you can say about every gaming laptop at this size.

Who It’s Built For

This isn’t a laptop aimed at someone just getting into PC gaming, the pricing and the hardware both make that clear. It’s better suited to gamers and creators who’ve already outgrown a mid-range machine: high-refresh 1440p gaming with ray tracing enabled, or content workflows, video export, rendering, multitasking across heavy applications, where 24 CPU cores and a 16GB+ GPU translate into real time saved rather than theoretical benchmark wins.

Price and Availability in South Africa

Pricing on the MSI Raider 16 Max HX in South Africa runs approximately R90,000 to R112,000, depending on which GPU tier (RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, or RTX 5090) and RAM/SSD configuration you choose. The laptop is available in a single Core Black finish across the range, MSI’s variation here comes from internal configuration (GPU, RAM from 32GB up, SSD from 2TB up) rather than exterior colorways. South African retailers currently listing the Raider 16 Max HX range include Evetech, Wootware, and LaptopDirect. As with any high-end configurable laptop, it’s worth checking current stock and exact configuration directly with the retailer, since GPU/RAM/SSD combinations shift pricing within that range.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Desktop-class CPU and GPU performance in a chassis that shrank rather than grew

240Hz OLED display with genuine HDR certification (on 5080/5090 configs)

Tool-light upgrade access to RAM and both storage slots

Full, dongle-free port selection: Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.1, SD Express, Ethernet

Four-speaker Dynaudio sound system that holds up without headphones

Cons

Firmly flagship pricing

2.6kg plus a 400W power brick isn’t an everyday-carry setup

OLED panel is exclusive to the 5080/5090 configs, the base RTX 5070 Ti model uses an IPS-level display

Battery life under gaming load will be short, as with any 300W-capable machine, this is a plug-in-first laptop

Final Thoughts

The MSI Raider 16 Max HX is MSI putting everything it currently has into a 16-inch shell: a desktop-tier processor, GPU options running up to an RTX 5090, a display that finally matches that performance, and a chassis that got smaller instead of bigger while doing it. It’s not a laptop built for someone shopping on a budget, and it doesn’t pretend to be. For a gamer or creator who’s already outgrown a mid-range machine, it’s a genuinely uncompromising option, and one of the more interesting flagship laptops MSI has put out in this category.

Three generations across two years with one goal: bringing high-performance handheld gaming to life

At Computex in Taipei, Taiwan, the world got a glimpse into the first handheld gaming device powered by the all-new Intel® Arc™ G3 Extreme processor.

Created by Taiwan-based MSI, the Claw 8 EX AI+ is now available for sale in an eye-catching “void purple” color exclusive to the device.

But creating an all-new handheld design isn’t like building a laptop.

It took Intel and MSI over two years to conceptualize and design the Claw 8 EX AI+, which incorporates best practices from laptop designs and key learnings from previous generation handhelds. Together, Intel and MSI have crafted a device that’s a fraction of the size and weight of a regular mobile PC

Here are three things you need to know about how Intel’s top engineers helped MSI to create the Claw 8 EX AI+.

#1: A multi-generational engineering commitment that builds on past learnings

This isn’t the first time Intel and MSI have worked together on a handheld design: MSI’s previous generations handhelds were based on Intel® Core Ultra Series 1 (codenamed Meteor Lake) and Intel® Core Ultra 200V series (codenamed Lunar Lake) processors.

With the Intel® Arc G-Series processor family, Intel took a different approach by creating a purpose-built SoC optimized for handheld gaming.

“We distilled everything we learnt from the last two generations of handheld designs into a new category of devices that set a new standard for handheld experiences,” explained Nish Neelalojanan, said Intel’s senior director of Product Management, Client Computing and Physical AI Group.

Neelalojanan explained how past experience guided Intel’s engineers to remain laser-focused on creating a handheld device that provided the best gaming experience.

To achieve this, engineering teams made use of the unmatched efficiency of Intel Arc G3 Extreme to improve the handheld design and experience.

Elsewhere, software optimizations dramatically increased battery life and ensured the device remains cool to the touch under load for user comfort.

Additionally, Intel collaborated with key software leaders like Microsoft to ensure a seamless gaming experience via Xbox Mode on Windows 11.

The end result?

The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is the first Intel-based handheld to offer console-like accessibility, while also improving performance by freeing up system resources and precompiling shaders, leading to smoother gameplay.

#2: Striking a fine balance in a tightly enclosed space where “every millimeter counts”

With past handhelds, gamers typically faced a tough decision – prioritize the best gaming performance at the expense of shorter battery life or choose to extend gaming sessions at the expense of performance.

Those binary decisions are a relic of the past.

“I think one of the biggest reasons gamers should choose the new MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is the incredible performance leap we’re seeing with the new Intel® Arc™ G3 Extreme platform,” said Joseph Shih, Claw product manager, MSI, explaining how top games like Cyberpunk 2077 now runs up to 37% faster, offer smoother frame rates and faster responsiveness.

Shih credits that huge leap in performance to the close collaboration between Intel and MSI.

“The key challenge in building any handheld is balancing performance, thermals, battery life, and comfort inside a very compact device – where every millimeter counts, as it will affect signal quality and compromise the end-user experience,” said Shih.

“From day one, both teams worked closely on motherboard layout, cooling, and power optimization to find the right balance between performance and efficiency.”

In one example of a close collaboration leading to a positive outcome, engineers decided to place the CPU and the DRAM components on opposite ends of the board to maximize space and optimize thermal efficiency, without affecting performance.

Other handheld designs tend to place these components next to each other to maintain signal strength.

“In a handheld, signal quality is extremely sensitive, so Intel’s signal simulation and validation support was critical to helping us achieve the right balance of stability, efficiency, and performance in such a compact body,” said Shih.

“What I really appreciated was how closely both teams worked behind the scenes. It genuinely felt like one engineering team focused on building the best possible handheld gaming experience for gamers,” Shih explained.

#3: The first successful power-on, pushes handheld gaming into AAA territory

Bruce Cheng fondly remembers January 2026 – it’s the month the joint Intel-MSI successfully powered on the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ for the first time.

It was the moment that signaled two hard years of shared engineering work had finally paid off.

Cheng, director of Advanced Co-engineering in Intel’s Customer Client Engineering group says that moment validated that the tough board-level circuitry decisions and hours of discussions with his MSI counterparts were the right bets.

“This was the first sign that the long, hard road made across three generations of handheld design discussions were paying off. It was proof that the performance gains we aspired to achieve were not just theoretical,” said Cheng.

The hard work didn’t end there. In the months to come, Cheng and his team would double down on performance tuning the handheld to where it mattered most – running AAA-games – while also carrying out additional engineering validation to ensure the device met the highest specifications.

That wasn’t all.

The joint team also monitored the dynamics of game titles – especially as gaming trends and preferences shift faster than in the laptop business.

“This learning mindset of continuous feedback loops and openness by both teams to revisit assumptions, make tough decisions and to course correct quickly was critical to our ability to deliver on time,” Cheng explained.

The first of many more handheld designs

While the MSI Claw 8 Extreme AI+ is the world’s first handheld design based on the Intel Arc G3 Extreme chip, it won’t be the last.

At Computex Taiwan, Intel revealed more designs from its OEM partners like Acer and OneXPlayer are coming to market soon.

“The Arc G3 family for handheld devices proves we can bring PC-class performance and flexibility to handhelds, while offering smooth immersive gameplay and extended playtime. We’re proud of our collaboration with MSI as our pioneering partner for Intel-powered handhelds and look forward to seeing what the industry does next with Arc G3,” said Neelalojanan.

The Small Print:

Performance varies by use, configuration and other factors.
Your GPU Just Got a Second Job. And It Pays. MSI is among the first major PC makers to ship a local-first AI agent.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — [June 1, 2026]— Today, MSI and BlueStacks are putting it to work. MSI is bringing Blue AI Worker to its gaming laptop lineup — an AI agent purpose-built for gamers that runs locally on the laptop’s GPU. Rollout begins with Titan, Raider, Stealth, Crosshair, Katana, and Cyborg series later in 2026 and will expand across the range. The partnership marks the first time a major PC manufacturer has committed to shipping a local-first AI agent designed specifically for gaming.

The expensive part of agentic AI — vision — runs on a locally-tuned vision-language model that reads the screen, understands what is on it, and decides what to act on. Only lightweight reasoning calls reach the cloud, where they remain small and inexpensive. The result: most of what would have been a monthly cloud bill stays on the GPU the gamer already paid for.

“Gamers already own the best consumer AI hardware on the planet — their GPU,” said Rosen Sharma, Chairman, now.gg. “Until now, it sat idle the moment they alt-tabbed out of the game. With Blue AI Worker on MSI, that hardware works for them: clipping highlights, tracking events, surfacing next-step guidance, and handling the routine in-game tasks players already do — and saving them real money in cloud AI costs while it does.” “MSI builds the most capable gaming laptops in the world, and that capability should extend beyond frames per second,” said Clark Peng, Vice President and Chief Product Officer of Notebooks at MSI, who leads the company’s product strategy. “Blue AI Worker turns every MSI laptop into an AI workstation gamers actually want to use. And because the savings scale with the GPU, customers get a tangible reason to choose higher-end hardware — not just better gameplay, but a measurable annual return.”

Built for gamers, across PC and mobile

Blue AI Worker ships with a library of skills purpose-built for gaming, including automatic highlight clipping, inventory and loadout organization, daily event and reward reminders, market and price tracking, and in-game next-step guidance. Skills are designed to assist players within each game’s terms of service. Because Blue AI Worker drives both the Windows desktop and an integrated mobile game environment, the same Worker operates seamlessly across PC and mobile titles. The skill ecosystem is open, allowing gamers and third-party developers to create and share skills for any game on either platform.

The same approach extends beyond gaming. Because Blue AI Worker reads the screen and operates across the apps gamers already use, its skills reach into everyday workflows too — surfacing what’s trending across major social and content apps, gathering and summarizing what matters, comparing options, and helping prepare posts and content for review. The agent does the legwork; the user stays in control, with actions like posting or sending kept approval-first.

Token Mileage — a new number on the spec sheet

Inspired by the estimated fuel savings displayed on every new electric vehicle, MSI laptops with Blue AI Worker will publish an estimated annual AI savings figure — Token Mileage — directly on the spec sheet. The figure scales with GPU tier:

MSI laptop with RTX 4060

~$300–$600/year

MSI laptop with RTX 4070 / 5060

~$500–$900/year

MSI laptop with RTX 4080 / 5070

~$900–$1,400/year

MSI laptop with RTX 4090 / 5080

~$1,300–$1,900/year

MSI laptop with RTX 5090

~$1,800–$2,500+/year

Estimated savings are based on replacing cloud AI inference with local AI workloads for frequent daily use. Actual savings vary by model, usage, and cloud provider pricing.

A live Token Mileage counter inside Blue AI Worker allows users to watch their actual savings accumulate over time. Estimates are based on a heavy-use scenario of approximately 10 million vision tokens per month priced against comparable hosted vision-language model rates, with the local VLM handling all screen-reading workload. Individual savings vary with usage, game mix, and cloud pricing.

Private by default. Fast enough for real gameplay.

Because Blue AI Worker keeps screen contents and game-account interactions on-device, screen contents and account credentials stay on the user’s laptop; only lightweight, abstracted reasoning requests reach the cloud. Local inference also delivers reaction times in the tens of milliseconds — fast enough for real-time companion play and in-game decisioning that cloud-only agents cannot match.

Availability

Blue AI Worker on MSI gaming laptops will be available starting on Titan, Raider, Stealth, Crosshair, Katana, and Cyborg series later in 2026. Blue AI Worker is included at no additional cost. Blue AI Worker will be showcased at the MSI booth during Computex 2026, Hall 1, Booth L0118.

About BlueStacks

BlueStacks creates categories. It made mobile games playable on the PC and built that into a platform with more than two billion lifetime downloads — the way hundreds of millions of people now play. Blue AI Worker is the next one: the moment that vast install base of gaming hardware becomes a personal AI engine. The same GPU that runs the game now runs the agent — locally, privately, and at no added cost. BlueStacks turned the PC into a gaming device; now it turns it into an AI worker that earns its keep.
